Are you struggling with fatigue, brain fog, sleep issues, or stubborn digestive problems that just won’t go away? You might be focusing on your thyroid—because your symptoms check all the boxes—but what if the missing piece of your healing journey isn’t just your thyroid? What if your gut and liver were the real culprits behind your symptoms?

Recently, I joined an IG LIVE discussion with an incredible panel of experts to talk about healing the thyroid naturally. If you missed it, don’t worry—you can still catch the recording [link to recording] and keep reading for the key takeaways from our conversation.

The Thyroid-Gut-Liver Connection

Most people think of thyroid issues as being solely about their thyroid. But here’s the truth: your thyroid doesn’t work alone. Your gut, liver, adrenals, and even stress levels all play a major role in how well your thyroid functions.

Here’s why:

  • Your liver converts thyroid hormone: Your thyroid produces mostly T4 (inactive thyroid hormone), but your liver is responsible for converting it into the active form, T3. If your liver is sluggish, your thyroid function suffers.

  • Your gut microbiome influences thyroid function: Around 20% of thyroid hormone conversion happens in the gut. If you have gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, or food sensitivities, your thyroid may not get the support it needs.

  • Inflammation from food sensitivities can trigger thyroid dysfunction: The most common culprits? Gluten, dairy, soy, and corn. Removing these can make a huge impact on reducing thyroid antibodies and supporting thyroid function.

Missing Markers on Thyroid Tests

One of the most frustrating things we see is how incomplete thyroid panels can be. Many doctors only test for TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), but this doesn’t tell the full story. Two critical markers that are often missing are:

Reverse T3 (rT3) – This tells us whether your body is blocking active thyroid hormone from being used. A high rT3 often signals stress, inflammation, or poor liver function.

T3 Uptake – This shows whether your cells are actually using the thyroid hormone available.

If you suspect thyroid issues, make sure you’re getting a full panel that includes Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, T3 Uptake, and thyroid antibodies (TPO & TG) to rule out Hashimoto’s.

Actionable Steps to Support Your Thyroid

Ready to take action? Here are a few simple yet powerful changes you can start today:

1. Ditch the Inflammatory Foods

If you want a healthy thyroid, it’s time to say goodbye to gluten, dairy, soy, and corn. These foods can increase inflammation, disrupt digestion, and contribute to autoimmune thyroid issues like Hashimoto’s.

2. Support Your Liver

Your liver is key to thyroid hormone conversion, so give it some love by:

  • Eating liver-supportive foods: beets, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts), and leafy greens.

  • Avoiding alcohol and processed foods.

  • Drinking filtered water to reduce exposure to chlorine, fluoride, and bromine—chemicals that disrupt thyroid function.

3. Prioritize Gut Health

A healthy gut means better thyroid hormone conversion. Some ways to improve gut health include:

  • Eating probiotic-rich foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir.

  • Including prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and leafy greens.

  • Removing inflammatory foods that trigger gut irritation and choosing a personalized diet based on food sensitivity testing.
